Dog Bites

4.7 million Americans are bitten by dogs annually, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. While only 16 of those bites result in death, even non-lethal dog bites can still cause serious injuries, scarring, disfigurement, or even permanent nerve damage. And that isn’t including the psychological trauma it can involve.

It’s the dog owner’s responsibility to restrain it safely. So as long as you’re legally present on the property, the dog’s owner may be liable. A victim can claim recompense from:

  • A person who violated a leash law or a law prohibiting dogs from "running at large,"
  • A person whose negligence caused the attack, or
  • A person who kept a dog with the knowledge that the dog had a history of injuring people.
